1 move Seahawks must make to keep up with Rams after Myles Garrett trade

The Seattle Seahawks are almost surely looking at regression this year. But they did make an in-house move after the Rams’ big trade for Myles Garrett. Still, here is one move the Seahawks must make to keep up with the Rams.

To be sure, this isn’t a move the Seahawks are likely to make. What will almost certainly happen is they play a waiting game. As the trade deadline approaches, the Seahawks will assess whether a repeat is a realistic goal. And then they could make a big trade.

But if they decide they want to keep up with the Rams after the Garrett trade, here is the only move that keeps them in the ballpark.

Seahawks must add another edge rusher

Fight fire with fire. It’s the only way to go. To be fair, the Seahawks had a strong pass rush in 2025. They tied for seventh, with the Rams and Texans, for seventh in the NFL with 47 sacks.

But the Rams have elevated to another level with the addition of Garrett. And the Seahawks got their total by committee last year. Uchenna Nowsu, Leonard Williams, and Byron Murphy each had seven. DeMarcus Lawrence totaled six.

If the Seahawks wanted to generate as much sack pressure as the Rams, they would need another big-time body in the rotation. The good news is that there are a few guys who would fit the bill.

The Seahawks should not necessarily pursue the Giants’ Brian Burns. Yes, he would close the gap with the Rams. But he’s a guy on the field a lot. The Seahawks need a player who can provide a high-level pass rush in bursts. They don’t want to push any of their current guys to the side.

Now, both of these guys come with injury risk. But the Seahawks could take a “no risk it, no biscuit” approach.

Seahawks could trade for TJ Watt

This makes the most sense for a couple of reasons. The Seahawks could keep Watt’s snap count low. This would help him avoid the injuries that have hampered his career lately. And it would allow the current roster guys to do their thing.

Watt will soon turn 32 years old. But he’s still an NFL pass rusher. Playing fresh and in situations where the other team needs to pass, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for him to get double-digit sacks.

Need proof? Von Miller, at age 36, totaled nine sacks for a bad Commanders defense in 2025. Watt has way more burst left in his legs than Miller.

Now this question comes into play: Would the Steelers ever trade Watt?

Maybe not right now, according to a post on X by Mark Kaboly.

“I am not going to sit here and pretend that the Browns didn’t get a pretty significant pull from the Rams for Myles Garrett, because they did,” Kaboly wrote. “A first, second, and third-round pick over the next three drafts, $41 million in dead money, and Jared Verse for Garrett is a lot on both sides.

“But the reason why I wouldn’t have done it this year is the Steelers have committed so much to win in 2026 that it makes no sense to move on at this particular point from Watt. Now, if you come to me next year with that deal, then I’m all ears. To me, Watt is still quite valuable to the 2026 version of the Pittsburgh Steelers.”

However, it depends on the 2026 situation. There’s a world where the Steelers get off to a bad start. And if they do that, perhaps they cut bait with Aaron Rodgers. And 2026 could be in the tank in the first third of the season. That’s where the Seahawks could make their move.

But if they want to do something in the preseason, then they’ll have to check in with Las Vegas.

Could a deal for edge rusher Maxx Crosby work?

The injury deal is significant. When a team like the Ravens backs out of an important deal, it’s clear that Crosby is no guarantee to last the season.

So this type of deal would trend more toward desperation by the Seahawks. The good news is that the same situation applies to Crosby as it does to Watt. The Seahawks could bring him in and manage his snap count.

Consider it something similar to what the Dodgers did with Shohei Ohtani last year. They nursed his pitching arm through the season, and it paid off with him helping them to a repeat title.

The Seahawks could limit Crosby against the AFC opponents. And they could be careful with him against the lesser NFC foes. And then turn him loose against the Rams, 49ers, Patriots, Broncos, Chiefs, Bears, Cowboys, and Eagles.

What would it cost the Seahawks in these trades?

At the least, their No. 1 pick in the loaded 2027 NFL Draft would be part of the package. That’s significant. Because even the No. 32 overall pick could be of great value. There’s more of a chance of landing a big-time talent that late than there has been in many years.

The Seahawks might also have to give up a 2028 pick. It shouldn’t be a No. 1, and probably not a second-round pick, either. But a third or a fourth seems in the ballpark.

How much will the urge to repeat as Super Bowl champions push the Seahawks? Remember, the organization got within one boneheaded play of going back-to-back a little over a decade ago.
