WWE social media posts ‘ruin’ John Cena last match surprise as fans claim they’ve spotted huge giveaway
John Cena’s retirement weekend was never going to slip quietly under the radar.
He bows out on Saturday night after more than two decades in the ring, but WWE may have sent the speculation into overdrive with a string of posts that some fans believe have all but spoiled a major return.

Cena brings the curtain down on a 20-year WWE career at Saturday Night’s Main Event when he faces the Austrian powerhouse Gunther in his final outing.
It is the end of a road paved with championships, milestones and pop-culture impact, yet the build to this weekend has taken on a slightly different energy.
Fans sense something bigger behind WWE’s nostalgia push
WWE have spent several days posting clips of Cena’s history with The Rock, resurfacing WrestleMania highlights and old promos as if rewinding one of the defining rivalries in company history.
“How lucky were we to see these two icons battle it out at #WrestleMania two years in a row?” asked WWE earlier this week.
Another post leaned into nostalgia again, declaring: “On that night, a meme was born!” under a close-up of The Rock in the middle of that iconic promo bashing Cena and his Marine movie franchise.
In isolation, they read like standard promotion. Together, they looked like a pattern – or at least that’s how fans interpreted it.
And when those posts landed around the same time as WWE publishing a full article congratulating Rock on his Golden Globe nomination, the theory only escalated.
The website wrote: “Legendary WWE Superstar and current TKO board member Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson earned a Golden Globe nomination for his performance in The Smashing Machine.”
It went on to add: “Johnson’s nomination came in the Best Male Actor in a Motion Picture Drama category for his portrayal of UFC icon Mark Kerr.”
The message closed simply: “Congratulations to The Rock on the incredible achievement!”

Within minutes of the posts circulating, fans began to join the dots. One pleaded directly to the Hollywood star: “We need you in DC on Saturday. I know you got Hollywood stuff as top priority, [but] this is an emergency.”
Another declared the signs impossible to ignore: “I would say on the back of WWE congratulating The Rock, the chances of him appearing on Saturday just increased dramatically.”
A third fan was even more convinced, writing: “This is classic WWE. Hint enough about The Rock to have him on people’s minds then have him show up unannounced. Just ruined the finale right there!”
One viewer even pointed out how naturally Rock would fit into Cena’s final chapter, saying: “The chances that The Rock shows up… for John Cena’s Final Match Ever is likely pretty high. The Rock and John Cena have had a long history together, and you can’t tell either one of their stories without the other.”
Another fan opted for humour over subtlety: “if the Rock doesn’t show up at Saturday night main event to wrap up the storyline at Cena’s retirement, I’m gonna fight Triple H.”
None of this would feel especially significant were it not for the fact that Cena and Rock’s shared history has been repeatedly referenced throughout this final run.

Cena’s heel turn earlier this year at Elimination Chamber saw him align briefly with The Rock and Travis Scott in one of the more chaotic storyline detours of 2025.
It was a move that dominated headlines, polarised fans and was never truly resolved on screen. Their alliance began abruptly and disappeared just as quickly, with Rock vanishing from television entirely after Elimination Chamber.
If WWE were ever going to close the loop, this weekend would be a natural place to do it.
Could The Rock be the final chapter in Cena’s story?
Fuel was added to the fire when The Rock himself entered the conversation with a comment on social media in tribute to his rival.
Rock wrote: “Love ya man and as you know, always grateful for all you’ve done for the business we love. You are truly the GOAT. Bring your moonshine, I’ll bring the tequila.”
It was warm, public and perfectly timed to push fans further toward believing something bigger was brewing.

WWE, of course, have form for this sort of thing. The wrestling company has mastered the art of hinting at major surprises without ever confirming them, letting the online chatter do much of the heavy lifting.
Posting Rock-fuelled nostalgia just days before Cena’s farewell is the kind of subtle nudge that leaves fans convinced they are reading between the lines. Whether they actually are, as ever, remains part of the intrigue.
What is certain is that Cena’s retirement match already carries immense emotional weight. Facing Gunther – one of the defining powerhouses of the modern era – gives the outgoing star a final, formidable mountain to climb.
The ultimate plot twist of Rock returning to prolong Cena’s career would seem distasteful at this point given the emotion the outgoing star has poured into his farewell but, for many, having The Great One show up to simply tip his hat one last time might be the icing on the cake.
