Why does Cristiano Ronaldo stand sideways during Portugal’s national anthem?
Cristiano Ronaldo will lead Portugal into the 2026 World Cup this summer in what will be his final tournament.
The 41-year-old footballing icon has achieved almost everything there is to achieve in the sport – but he’s missing one thing.

Ronaldo has never won the World Cup, and what better way to end your career in the tournament than by claiming it for the first time?
It means all eyes will be on the Portugal legend this summer and because of that, many fans will notice something strange.
He has a different stance from the rest of his team when singing the Portuguese anthem before a game, and here’s why…
Why does Ronaldo stand sideways during Portugal’s national anthem?
In the usual tradition before every international game kicks off, both squads stand together as the national anthems are played.
Although when Portugal play, many have noticed that Ronaldo is standing sideways in the line-up of players.
As the team put their arms around each other, the captain turns to the side and stands at an angle to sing.
He does this so he can face the Portugal flag in the stadium as a patriotic gesture during the anthem.
Ronaldo has made this a tradition of his over the years as he shows respect to his country ahead of games.
And his gesture is likely to be on show at the World Cup this summer, as Portugal look to win the tournament for the first time.
In his five attempts at glory throughout his incredible international career, Ronaldo has never managed to claim the trophy.

The last dance
When asked whether the 2026 World Cup would be his last in November, Ronaldo said: “Of course. I’ll be 41 by then.
“In football, I try to enjoy the moment. I’m 40 years old, so I try to make the most of every moment.
“I want to continue because I feel good, my body is in good shape, and my performances on the field speak for themselves.”
He added: “Let’s be honest, when I mean soon, it’s probably one or two years, I’ll still be at the game.
“In the national team, I score goals, I help the team, and I want to win trophies.”
