‘Where are the standards?’ – Roy Keane claims Manchester United ‘defended like a pub team’ in savage rant

Roy Keane gave a scathing assessment of Manchester United’s latest performance after their draw with West Ham.

The Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford on Thursday night.

Ruben Amorim’s side could have moved level on points with fourth placed Chelsea with a win over the Hammers.

United had appeared on course to do so after Diogo Dalot opened the scoring in the second half.

However, the hosts failed to build on their lead and allowed West Ham back into the match.

This was ultimately punished by Soungoutou Magassa, who grabbed a late equaliser as the points were shared.

Keane’s United rant

Keane was left furious with his old side at full-time as he labelled United a ‘pub team’ during an explosive rant.

The former Red Devils captain did not hold back as he reacted to the second half performance on Sky Sports.

Speaking during their post-match coverage, Keane exclaimed: “After they get the goal, you are playing against a team in the bottom three, they take their foot off the gas.

“You’re 1-0 up! Take nothing away from West Ham, and they just about deserved the equaliser.

“You are just putting yourself under pressure. Every time I watch this United team, they disappoint. They aren’t clinical; they weren’t nasty enough to get the job done.

“People will be scratching their heads. One minute they are making progress, win and you go fifth. There will be a lot of frustration.

“Show your quality. In their last three or four games, I think it has been desperate. Really poor. An opportunity to get the job done, and they were almost frightened.

“We are talking about fifth here, by the way. Same old problems.”

West Ham had started the evening inside the Premier League’s bottom three after Leeds win on Wednesday night.

Meanwhile, Amorim made a string of changes after his side had taken the lead.

Diogo Dalot, Matheus Cunha and Joshua Zirkzee were replaced by Patrick Dorgu, Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount whilst United were in front.

However, they were unable to see out the remainder of the match, much to Keane’s frustration.

He added: “United are making substitutions, and he is entitled to do that, but I was watching people come off and it was like they had won the league!

“Show some intensity. It was all a bit, this is cool. You cannot be cool when you’re 1-0 up. Get the job done!

“United have better players than West Ham but this is not a good United team. It was too relaxed, get the job done!

“The last three or four games, that sums them up. Not quite doing enough.

“Where is the frustration with the group players? I’ve watched the games closely. The lack of quality and intensity. They got two goals against Palace, but they defended like a pub team.

“Tonight, you give United praise before the game and can go fifth. This team is not ready to go fifth, fifth in the league!

“They’ve got Wolves next, they are one of the worst teams I’ve ever seen in the Premier League. Let’s see.

“I don’t get how the players or the manager don’t sense it. That there could be a twist. They have to do better than that.”

Keane continued: “You can’t relax. It was the substitutions. Every player at Old Trafford now gets a standing ovation! Where are the standards at the club?

“Where are your demands on the club? You expectations. You are waiting for something to happen and get the job done. Relax at 3-0.”

The result leaves United eighth in the table after 14 matches, although they are just two points adrift of the top four.

After a run of three wins in a row in October, though, the Red Devils have now won just one of their last five Premier League matches.

Keane concluded: “When you look at the squad, considering the money that has been spent, they lack strength in depth. Particularly in the attacking areas.

“I look at Mason Mount when he came on, he was like a schoolboy out there! You’re looking for players to come on with presence.

“They brought the levels down at United. That seemed to be the case tonight.”
