VJ Edgecombe hits 3-point winner in 76ers OT thriller vs Grizzlies

In a game so good, it needed more than 48 minutes to decide a winner, the Philadelphia 76ers found themselves all tied up at 136-all against the Memphis Grizzlies with just 18.3 seconds left to play.

After having some minor confusion over where they could inbound the ball, with it ruled Tyrese Maxey couldn’t take the ball up from the 76ers’ side of halfcourt, Philadelphia did their best to hunt for a good shot against a Grizzlies team that didn’t exactly play lights out defense during regulation.

As defenders crashed in on Maxey, the ball ultimately landed in the hands of rookie first-round pick VJ Edgecombe, who, without hesitation, chucked it up from beyond the arc, connecting on a deep 3 to give Philadelphia a three-point lead with just 1.7 seconds left in overtime.

In a game that was largely defined by strong play by Philadelphia’s Big 3, with MVP candidate Maxey putting up 34 on 21 shots, Joel Embiid matching him on seven more attempts, and Paul George rounding things out with 17 points on 17 shots, his sixth-highest point total of the season so far, it was Edgecombe who consistently came up big for his team. Over 41 minutes of action, Edgecombe connected on 10 of his 21 shots, scoring 25 points to go with four steals, six rebounds, and four assists.

Is the 76ers’ Big 3 actually a Big 4? Financially, no, but on the court, one could argue that Edgecombe has been Philadelphia’s third-best player when everyone is healthy, which is a pretty impressive accomplishment for a rookie who won’t be able to enter a bar until the summer of 2026.
