Tiger Woods turns down Team USA captaincy at Ryder Cup as statement released

Tiger Woods has turned down the chance to be Team USA’s captain at the next Ryder Cup.

In a statement from PGA America, they confirmed that the golf legend had declined the chance to lead the Americans in 2027.

The statement said: “We commend Tiger for prioritising his long-term health and deeply respect the courage it takes to make such a personal decision.

“Tiger has shared with us that he will not serve as Captain of the 2027 US Ryder Cup Team and we support his decision. The PGA of America will share further updates regarding the Ryder Cup Captaincy when appropriate.

“The PGA of America stands in full support of Tiger Woods as he steps away to focus on his health and well-being.

“During this time, we are keeping Tiger in our thoughts and prayers, with sincere hope for his strength, comfort, and recovery.

“Tiger has meant so much to our Association and to the game of golf. Since his Ryder Cup debut in 1997, he has been an enduring part of the PGA of America family.

“His connection to our PGA of America Golf Professionals and his lasting impact on the sport, have inspired generations and profoundly shaped the game.”

The decision from Woods follows his announcement this week that he is taking a hiatus from golf following his arrest in Florida last Friday.

The American was involved in a car crash on Friday and submitted a not guilty plea to the charges of driving under the influence.

He then announced he would be taking a break from golf and not participating in the 2026 Masters, which starts next week.
