Tiger Woods arrested and charged with DUI after escaping high-speed rollover crash uninjured

Tiger Woods has been arrested and charged with a non-alcohol-related DUI following a rollover car crash in Florida.

The golf legend is currently being held in Mark Kennedy Jail after escaping the collision uninjured.

Woods swerved to avoid crashing into a truck while overtaking at high speed and crawled out of the passenger seat after his SUV was turned on its side.

Police officers at the scene noticed signs of impairment and Woods explained his injury situation, having spent a year recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon and more recently spine surgery.

The 50-year-old completed a breathalyser test but refused to provide a blood test or urine sample and was subsequently taken to jail.

He will remain incarcerated for a minimum of eight hours under local law.

Sheriff John Budensiek statement - in full

“Our investigation revealed as follows. Shortly before 2pm, the truck pulling a small trailer was northbound on South Beach road and was pulling to turn into a driveway.

“The driver of that vehicle looked in his mirror and saw a dark-coloured Land Rover overtaking him at high speeds, I don’t know what speeds.

“The Land Rover kept overtaking him, he saw it coming so he tried to edge off to the side of the road, but this is a small two-lane road and there was no shoulder for this gentleman to get off the side of the road.

“As he was trying to move to the side of the road, the Land Rover overtook him at the last minute, swerved to avoid a collision but clipped the backend of the trailer of the pressure cleaner apparatus, listed to the side and then rolled on the driver’s door north past the truck that it just avoided the crash with.

“The individual driving that Land Rover was able to crawl out the passenger door of the car and was identified to be Mr Tiger Woods.

“Our DUI investigators came to the scene here and Mr Woods did exemplify signs of impairment. They did several tests on him, of course he did explain the injuries and the surgeries that he had, we did take that into account.

“But they did do some in-depth roadside tests and when it was determined, he was placed under arrest and taken to the Martin County jail.

“At the Martin County jail, and even on scene, we weren’t suspicious of alcohol being involved in this case and that proved to be true at the jail. Mr Woods did a breathalyser test, blew triple zeros. But when it came time for us to ask for a urinalysis test, he refused and so he’s been charged with DUI and with property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test.

“In the crash, no one was injured. Mr Woods did not seem to be injured at all and the other gentleman was not injured.”

Woods, who sustained serious injuries in a near-fatal 2021 crash, has been keen to make his competitive return at the Masters – which begins in less than two weeks.

The 15-time major winner had just made his 2026 season debut earlier in the week as he played in the TGL final.

It marked the first time Woods had hit televised shots in more than a year after recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon.

The 50-year-old is thought to have undergone around 20 significant surgeries in his career.

Speaking on a potential return at the Masters, which he has won five times during his career, Woods said most recently: “I’ve been trying.

“This body just doesn’t recover like it did when I was 24 or 25. I want to play.

“I love the tournament. I love being there since I was 19 years old. I’m going to be there either way.”

US president Donald Trump recently claimed that Woods, who is dating his son’s ex-wife Vanessa Trump, was not going to tee it up at Augusta.

Earlier on Friday, it emerged that Woods had registered to play in the Senior US Open to ensure eligibility should he decide to compete, having turned 50 in December.

History of crashes

Woods has been involved in a number of high-profile car crashes already in his life.

In 2009, he crashed into a fire hydrant, a tree and multiple hedges outside his home, following an argument with then-wife Elin Nordegren.

It sparked a global news scandal as the cause of the row was revealed to be multiple infidelities, leading to Woods making a televised apology and taking a break from golf.

In 2017, he was arrested for driving under the influence after being found asleep at the wheel, with toxicology reports showing a multitude of prescription medications in his system.

Woods was recovering from spinal fusion surgery at the time.

Despite a future at the top level appearing almost impossible, the golfing icon would return to glory at the 2019 Masters, winning his first major in 11 years.

Two years later, he was involved in a high-speed, single-vehicle crash that left him lucky to walk out of the hospital with both legs.

Woods later revealed it was ’50/50′ whether his right leg would have to be amputated given the severity of his injuries.

He made an astonishing comeback at the 2022 Masters just 14 months later and made the cut.

However, Woods has not been the same since, appearing in eight majors and completing all four days just twice.

He has missed four cuts and been forced to withdraw on the other two occasions.

Woods has also appeared in a handful of PGA Tour events but competes sparingly outside the majors.

The five-time Masters champion has been heavily involved in the first two seasons of TGL, the indoor golf league he helped create alongside Rory McIlroy.
