Teammates left covered in blood after sickening collision during Champions League clash

Olympiakos’ Panos Retsos and Lorenzo Pirola were left dripping in blood after a shocking head collision.

The Greek side’s Champions League play-off first leg against Bayer Leverkusen had to be suspended following the duo’s accidental clash.

With the game goalless 34 minutes in, it came to a sudden halt when Restos and Pirola collided after going for the same ball.

The two players both charged forward to try and clear the ball and collided into each other.

It was quickly apparent that the duo needed some immediate medical assistance with the referee bringing things to a stop.

Leverkusen and Olympiakos players also called for help, and the match came to a stop for six minutes as they received the necessary treatment.

Pirola had a bandage wrapped around his head, and for Restos, the concern was his jaw, and that was dressed.

Both players had to change their shirts due to the amount of blood on them.

The match was stopped again on 44 minutes as Pirola’s wound re-opened when he celebrated what he thought was an opener for his team.

Ayoub El Kaabi scored, but it was disallowed by VAR due to Mehdi Taremi being in an offside position and influencing the play.

Pirola ran away from the physios to celebrate, but it was all in vain.

And it proved to be his final action as he was replaced at half time by Giulian Biancone.

How did the game unfold?

That disallowed Olympiakos goal was as good as it got for the home side who fell to a 2-0 defeat against Leverkusen.

Patrick Schick scored both goals for the Bundesliga side, who will feel in control heading into the second leg.

In truth, Schick could have had a hat-trick as he missed an early chance from a cross that was saved.

The visitors should have scored later in the half when Ernest Poku ran through and put it wide when one-on-one.

But Schick redeemed himself in the second half as he collected a through ball and fired into the bottom corner.

And three minutes later, he got on the end of an in-swinging corner to power a header into the back of the net.

And that was all they needed, Leverkusen saw off what little came their way and got the win.
