Sunderland v Newcastle prediction
Sunderland enter the eagerly anticipated clash higher in the Premier League table, though their recent form has dipped. After a blistering start to their first top flight season since 2017, they have managed just one win in their last six matches.
Even so, Regis Le Bris’ side remain in the top half, sitting ninth and only three points behind fourth-placed Crystal Palace.
While victories have been scarce, the Black Cats have lost just two of their last eight league games and drawn three of their last six. And, as the old saying goes, in a derby such as this, form goes out the window.
On Wearside, Sunderland have been particularly strong – they are one of only two Premier League teams yet to lose at home this season and will be determined to protect that record on Sunday.
Newcastle make the short trip in better overall form, unbeaten in their last four matches despite conceding a late equaliser to Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Eddie Howe’s side started the campaign slowly, but a return of 10 points from their last four Premier League games has lifted them to 12th place. In a tightly packed table, they sit just three points behind fifth-placed Chelsea and only one behind Sunderland.
However, the Magpies’ away form remains a concern. They have won only two of their 10 matches on the road across all competitions and have lost four of their last six away games.
Sunderland are unbeaten in their last nine Premier League encounters with Newcastle, winning six of the last seven, but the sides have not met in the league for nearly a decade. Newcastle did, however, come out on top when the rivals clashed in the FA Cup last year.
Newcastle head into Sunday’s huge derby arguably in the best form of their season, while Sunderland are perhaps in the midst of the worst run of theirs, which leads to believe the Magpies may get the better of the two sides on Sunday, I’m leading towards a 3-1 away win.
Sunderland v Newcastle betting tips
Derby delight for in form Magpies
Newcastle head into Sunday’s derby in their best league form of the season having picked up 10 points from their last four games and are four matches without defeat in all competitions.
Sunderland, meanwhile, are perhaps in their worst form of the campaign with just one win in six, and were beaten 3-0 when the sides last met in the FA Cup last year.
- Newcastle to win and both teams to score at 3/1 with Spreadex
Gordon in the goals
Wednesday night’s goal in Germany against Bayer Leverkusen was this third goal in just over a week, taking his tally for the season to seven and joint-top of Newcastle’s goal scoring charts for the campaign.
- Anthony Gordon to score at 13/5 with Midnite
Joelinton in the book
No player on either team has received as many yellow cards as Newcastle midfielder Joelinton, who has six for the season and will no doubt be charged up for Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby.
- Joelinton to be carded at 7/5 with Spreadex
