Steelers news: DK Metcalf’s appeal has NFL following up with Lions about fan punishment

It sounds like Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver D.K. Metcalf overreacted, if you can believe the fan. It resulted in a two-game suspension for Metcalf. However, Metcalf’s appeal has the NFL following up with the Lions about punishment for the fan, according to a post on X by Tom Pelissero.

“Update: Per the NFL, the matter remains under review. After hearing from DK Metcalf in his appeal hearing on Tuesday, the league is following up with the Lions regarding the fan code of conduct.”

However, the NFL upheld Metcalf’s suspension. That puts the Steelers in a tough spot to close the season as they try to hold off the Ravens in the AFC North.

Steelers WR D.K. Metcalf hurt his team

Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin tried to stand behind Metcalf, according to ESPN.

“He did explain to me why he did what he did,” Tomlin said. “And I certainly don’t condone the behavior, but I support DK. And I really don’t have a lot to add other than what I just told you.

“He’s been great. He cares. He works hard. He’s a heck of a guy. He’s a good teammate, and that’s why he’s easy to support.”

The Steelers will have to go forward with a receiver group that has running back Kenneth Gainwell leading the way with 62 catches for 410 yards. Following him are tight ends Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington.

That leaves Calvin Austin III as the top receiver. He has averaged a little over two catches per game for 24 yards. Those are terrible numbers for a guy who will take over the top role.

It’s even worse after that, as Roman Wilson has only 12 catches for 166 yards on the season.

It’s going to be a challenge for Aaron Rodgers against a Browns’ defense that has teeth. It may be bad news for Myles Garrett, who may not get many record-setting sack opportunities against the slow-footed Rodgers. That’s because the Steelers will likely try to win with their ground game. However, it may be tough because the Browns are No. 5 in the NFL against the run.
