Ruben Amorim makes bombshell statement in Man United press conference as Old Trafford power struggle breaks out

Ruben Amorim sent a strong message to the Manchester United board in a bombshell press conference after drawing with Leeds United.

Amorim, who joined the Premier League giants in November 2024, insisted he is the manager of the club, not just the head coach.

Amorim signed a contract that runs until June next year, with United having the option to extend this by a further year.

However, when speaking after their 1-1 draw against Leeds on Sunday, he hinted that he won’t stay any longer than his deal.

He also insisted that he prefers to be called a different title to head coach, before name-dropping former Premier League managers.

Amorim reveals stance on Man United future

Amorim said: “I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the head coach.

“I know my name is not [Antonio] Conte, [Thomas] Tuchel, or [Jose] Mourinho but I’m the manager of Manchester United.

“It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit.

“I’ll do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.”

talkSPORT understands there is growing tension between Amorim and United director of football Jason Wilcox.

Sources close to Old Trafford say Wilcox would like Amorim to be more tactically adaptable.

Amorim has also been told bringing in reinforcements this transfer window is unlikely.

“The transfer window is not going to change,” he recently said.

“We have no conversation to have any change in the squad, there is a process, there is an idea.

“We are near the Champions League places, but we also near eight teams behind us, so let’s focus on the next game.”

United are undefeated in their last three league matches but the draw at Leeds is their second in a row.

They dropped points against the-then winless Wolves at the end of 2025 before doing the same at Elland Road on Sunday.

However, they remain fifth in the table behind rivals Liverpool in the race for a top four finish.
