Southampton were bizarrely robbed of an equaliser away at Wolves in controversial fashion following VAR intervention.

Wolves took the lead in the second minute of the clash – dubbed ‘El Sackico’ due to the pressure both Gary O’Neil and Russell Martin are under – through Pablo Sarabia.

But the Saints thought they had got back on level terms ten minutes later.

Left-back Ryan Manning smashed home a drive from inside the box into the top left corner in what he thought was his first Premier League goal.

The hosts had failed to clear their lines, allowing Manning to get a free shot on goal.

Wolves immediately protested the goal, claiming Nelson Semedo had been fouled by Mateus Fernandes, which presented Manning with the opportunity.

Referee Thomas Bramall was then instructed to watch the incident on the pitchside monitor, where he subsequently ruled out the equaliser.

And he agreed with the view of VAR that Semedo had been fouled, with there being contact on the ex-Barcelona right-back’s calf. over what appeared to be a simple coming together.

A statement on X from the PGMOL read: “Manning’s goal was awarded on-field.

“The VAR deemed that there was a foul by Fernandes on Semedo in the build-up and recommended an on-field review.

“The referee overturned the original decision and play restarted with a Wolves free-kick.”

However it was a decision that former Premier League whistleblower disagreed with.

He raged on Sky Sports: “It’s very, very harsh.

“It actually looks like the foul is the other way…

“They should have stuck with the on-field decision in my view.

“I don’t think it was a foul. I don’t think it should have been overturned.”

The decision could prove crucial with both Wolves and Southampton struggling for points so far this season.

Both teams went into Matchweek 11 in the bottom three, with Wolves failing to record a top-flight victory so far.

While Martin’s side have picked up a solitary win.
