Does the NFL always have games on Christmas Day?

While Christmas Day games have been the norm for the NFL since 2020, they haven’t always been a traditional fixture.

Massive broadcasting fees from platforms like Netflix and Amazon have recently made these games a permanent annual reality, whereas the NFL previously skipped Christmas if it fell in the middle of the week.

Moving forward, there is now expected to be a Christmas triple-header every year for the foreseeable future.

The NFL first aired games on Christmas in 1971, but after the second match between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs became the longest game in NFL history, millions of American families found that their Christmas dinners had been “ruined.”

Public anger was so high following the event that Commissioner Pete Rozelle effectively blacklisted the holiday to avoid further controversy.

Games eventually returned to Christmas Day in 1989, though they did not become a guaranteed feature of the schedule every year until much later.
