Rowett’s sacking from Oxford comes one year and one day after being hired at the Kassam Stadium following Des Buckingham’s sacking, taking over a newly promoted Championship side who occupied 23rd in the table but were only one point from safety.
The former Millwall, Birmingham and Derby manager guided the Us to a 17th placed finish upon the club’s first season in the second tier since 1999.
However, just one win in their last 10 matches including just one point picked up from their last four, has seen Oxford drop down into the relegation zone, where the club will spend Christmas 22nd in the table, two points from safety having played a game more than the sides above them, ultimately leading to the 51-year-old’s sacking.

Michael Beale is the current favourite to be named as Rowett’s replacement, priced as 4/6 odds on favourite to take on the role in the hotseat at the Kassam Stadium.
The 45-year-old has been out of a job since departing his role as Steven Gerrard’s assistant manager at Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in January of this year.
The Londoner has previously managed QPR, Rangers and Sunderland, impressing in his time in west London, taking QPR to the brink of the play-offs before signing with the Glasgow side, before an ill-fated spell on Wearside lasted just 12 matches before his sacking two seasons ago.
Crystal Palace and Republic of Ireland assistant manager Paddy McCarthy is priced at second favourite at 4/1 for what would be his first role as manager of a senior team.
Two former Oxford managers are next in the odds list to return to the Kassam Stadium dugout, with Liam Manning, who was sacked as Norwich manager earlier this season, and Karl Robinson, currently managing Salford in League Two, priced at 5/1 and 6/1 respectively.
