‘Never seen that before’ – Michael Vaughan left baffled after Australia star stops Ashes Test over rival’s sunglasses

If you don’t ask, you don’t receive.

As Australian star Steve Smith stood out in the middle at the Sydney Cricket Ground, he forced a brief stop to the action on day three of the fifth Ashes Test.

It wasn’t due to an oblivious fan who hadn’t taken their seat in time.

Nor was it down to an equipment malfunction.

Instead, Smith asked England bowler Brydon Carse to turn his sunglasses around due to the glare coming from them.

“Carsey, Carsey, can you just turn your glasses around?” Smith said.

Carse, who was fielding at mid off, obliged and placed his sunglasses on the back of his head.

However, former England captain Michael Vaughan was in utter disbelief at how easily Carse heeded Smith’s request.

“That’s very nice of Brydon to do so,” Vaughan said on Fox Cricket.

“Don’t think there’s any regulation for the way you put on your glasses?

“I’ve never seen that before in my life.

“Brydon Carse should just put them on. I can’t believe he’s actually said, ‘OK, no problem.'”

Smith’s unusual request did little to distract from what was a sensational innings as he finished day three unbeaten on 129.

The Australian vice-captain’s century was his 37th in Test cricket and fifth at the SCG.

Smith’s knock also placed him second for runs scored in Ashes Tests, with only Sir Donald Bradman ahead of him.

His century along with Travis Head’s 166-ball 163 put Australia in a commanding position going into day four.

Head’s century was his third of the Ashes, having previously hit a ton in the first and third Tests.

The hosts reached stumps at 7/518, giving them a 134-run lead over an England side that has already lost the Ashes.
