NBA rumors: Why Kyrie Irving, Mavericks owner could be obstacle to Anthony Davis trade

Recently, rumors have been swirling around the Dallas Mavericks and whether they may be looking to trade All-Star Anthony Davis. Cooper Flagg has emerged on the scene as the team’s clear building block moving forward, and continued injury frustrations for Davis may motivate Dallas to look to trade the key piece they got back in the infamous Luka Doncic trade last season.

The Mavericks have struggled this year, and a large part of the reason why is the absence of Kyrie Irving, who has yet to return to the lineup from last year’s torn ACL injury. Recently, NBA insider Marc Stein detailed how Irving’s presence may motivate team owner Patrick Dumont to hold off on a Davis trade for now.

“The Mavericks have yet to see Flagg, Davis and Irving play together for one second and I’m told that new Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont is certainly among those in the organization who would prefer to see how that trio looks before doing something else drastic,” reported Stein on his Substack.

“Waiting until the offseason and the increased optionality that the summer typically provides might emerge as the preferred course,” he added.

It would certainly be interesting to see what the Mavericks would look like with Irving, Davis, and Flagg all in uniform, but at this point, it wouldn’t appear likely that Irving alone would be enough to get Dallas into true contender status out West.

That’s also before taking into account that future injuries would appear to be likely for Davis, and possibly Irving, considering that he is a smaller guard who will soon be 34 years old and coming off a devastating injury.

In any case, the Mavericks will next take the floor on Monday evening for a game on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers. Davis is currently listed as questionable for that contest.
