Myles Garrett fires brutal shot to Mason Rudolph after infamous helmet attack that cost him $1.2m

Just over six years ago, Myles Garrett was ejected after an infamous clash with Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph.

Garrett was thrown out in the closing seconds of the Browns’ 21-7 win over the Steelers in December 2019 after ripping Rudolph’s helmet off and striking him in the head with it.

That moment would become a defining chapter for both players’ careers, with the fallout continuing for months.

However, when Garrett, who is nearing the single-season sack record, was asked about Rudolph this week, he dismissed the idea that there was much history between the pair.

“I don’t think there’s a lot of history between the two of us, but whether I get it against him or I get it against Aaron, makes no difference to me as long as it gets got,” Garrett said.

Garrett was asked about Rudolph as he may face the quarterback this weekend.

The Steelers could rest several starters against the Browns on Sunday, should they clinch the AFC North title as a result of the Baltimore Ravens losing or tying with the Green Bay Packers.

And should Aaron Rodgers be rested, it’ll be Rudolph who will step in for the veteran.

Garrett enters the game with 22 sacks and could make history against either Rudolph or Rodgers, as he is just half-sack away from tying the all-time single-season record.

The record is currently shared by Pro Football Hall of Famer Michael Strahan and Steelers edge rusher T.J. Watt.

A full sack would see Garret have the record all to himself.

What happened between Mason Rudolph and Myles Garrett?

Rudolph and Garrett’s brawl began when the quarterback was sacked by the defensive end and appeared to try to take the Browns’ star helmet off.

But once the pair got up, it was Garrett who got hold of the quarterback’s helmet and took a swing with it, which connected with Rudolph’s head.

After the game, Garrett admitted he was foolish to behave like that.

“What I did was foolish, and I shouldn’t allow myself to slip like that,” Garrett said.

“That’s out of character, but a situation like that where it’s an emotional game, and I allowed myself to fall into those emotions with what happened.”

The NFL suspended Garrett for the final six games of the season, which cost him $1.2 million in pay and a fine of $45,623.

Months later, Garrett alleged that his behaviour was provoked by Rudolph using a racial slur towards him, something which the quarterback denied, and the NFL said they found no evidence of.

Garrett wants to sack Rodgers

The 29-year-old spoke about how special it would be to get the record-breaking sack in the home finale against the legendary Rodgers.

“[Rodgers is] legendary himself, and it’s a legendary record I’m here chasing,” Garrett said Friday.

“That’d be a great one to put a picture on the wall with.”

In his two career games against Rodgers, Garrett has never brought down Rodgers.
