Metz vs Paris Saint-Germain predictions and betting tips – PSG to inflict more pain on struggling Metz

Two teams in contrasting positions will meet on Saturday when bottom-of-the-table Metz host PSG at the Stade Saint-Symphorien.

The hosts have the unenviable task of trying to snap a three-match losing skid against the European Champions. Making the task for Metz all the more difficult, PSG are second in the table and can’t afford to drop any points.

Metz vs PSG prediction

A 3-1 defeat away to Auxerre last Sunday saw Metz replace their conquerors at the bottom of Ligue 1.

The loss was Metz’s third in a row and tenth in 15 matches, leaving them on just 11 points and in big trouble.

Les Grenats had an abysmal start to the season that saw them win none of their opening nine matches, picking up just two points from a possible 27.

The poor run saw them spend all but one week rooted to the bottom of the table. It culminated with three successive defeats to Marseille (3-0), Toulouse (4-0) and Lille (6-1).

Things appeared to be at rock bottom for Stéphane Le Mignan, whose job was hanging by a thread. However, the team then rallied and somehow picked up nine points with successive wins against Lens (2-0), Nantes (2-0) and Nice (2-1).

Sadly for Le Mignan, that winning run came to an end when they lost 3-2 at Brest on Matchday 13.

A 1-0 defeat at home to Rennes quickly followed before last weekend’s hammer blow when they lost to the then bottom-of-the-table Auxerre in what had already been billed as a proverbial six-pointer.

It’s hard to see any light at the end of the tunnel for Le Mignan and his team as they prepare for a game against the defending Ligue 1 champions.

PSG find themselves in the unusual position of not leading Ligue 1.

In what has been a messy start to the season, the Parisians will begin Matchday 16 sitting second in the table with 33 points from 15 matches. They have already lost twice and have dropped 12 points.

To put that into some context, PSG only dropped 18 points throughout the whole of last season. And eight of those were dropped in their final five matches, when the league title was already sewn up.

Luis Enrique’s team have had a lot of injuries to cope with. Nevertheless, they have one of the most expensively assembled squads in Europe, so sympathy is in short supply.

A 1-0 defeat away at Monaco on Matchday 14 saw the champions surrender the top spot.

The Parisians quickly bounced back by thrashing Rennes 5-0 last weekend. A Khvicha Kvaratskhelia brace, along with goals from Senny Mayulu, Ibrahim Mbaye, and Gonçalo Ramos saw Enrique’s team cruise to a comfortable win.

However, the goals dried up again in midweek in the Champions League, when an Ousmane Dembélé-less PSG struggled to break down Athletic Club and had to settle for a 0-0 draw in Spain.

The Ballon d’Or winner was a late withdrawal through illness and he looks likely to play no part for PSG again this weekend.

Metz vs PSG betting tips

Stéphane Le Mignan’s job was under threat following Metz’s 6-1 loss to Lille at the end of October. A heavy defeat to PSG could signal the end of his reign at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. Our Metz vs PSG tips follow:

PSG favoured to win comfortably

PSG are just 2/9 to win in the match betting market. In order to get their odds up to something near backable we are looking at the European handicap market.

Metz have a goal difference of -19. They have conceded 34 goals in their 15 Ligue 1 matches this season. Furthermore, six of their ten defeats this campaign have been by two or more goals.

We can see the Parisians winning this by at least the two goals required for this wager to win. Probably more.

Le Mignan on the brink as Metz leaking too many goals

The writing seems on the wall for Stéphane Le Mignan at Metz.

It was always going to be difficult to come back from their disastrous start to the season. However, Le Mignan’s team did show some fight with three straight wins at the end of October and into early November.

Those wins now seem like a distant memory and conceding three times against the then bottom-of-the-table Auxerre last weekend is nearly as bad as it gets.

Against a team that is running on empty when it comes to confidence, there is every chance PSG will better that scoreline on Saturday.

Kvaratskhelia well placed to net again

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored a brace in PSG’s 5-0 win over Rennes last weekend. His double strike took his season’s tally to three goals and three assists in Ligue 1.

The Georgian hasn’t looked as sharp and on song this season as last, but he is still a hugely influential member of this Paris team. Especially in the absence of Ousmane Dembélé, who looks set to miss out again on Saturday.

Metz have conceded seven goals in their previous three matches. They look there for the taking. Back Kvaratskhelia to cash in on their poor form.
