Manchester City v Chelsea betting tips and selections: Top picks for Super Sunday clash

The final match of this weekend’s Premier League programme sees Manchester City taking on managerless Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday evening (5.30pm kick-off), with the game live on Sky Sports Premier League and Sky Sports Main Event.

Neither team got the result they wanted from their latest outings, with Chelsea held to a 2-2 home draw by Bournemouth on Tuesday, while City saw their run of eight consecutive wins ended by a goalless draw with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on New Year’s Day.

Pep Guardiola’s side headed into the weekend fixtures in second place in the standings, but 11 points ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea, who could be lower in the table by kick-off as they are only three points ahead of 11th place.

The Blues are expected to be under the temporary charge of academy coach Calum McFarlane after parting company with Enzo Maresca, which adds an element of the unknown to the contest.

Our three best bets for Sunday’s Premier League clash are below.

Man City vs Chelsea betting tips

  • Man City to win & over 1.5 goals @ 20/23
  • Rayan Cherki anytime goalscorer @ 4/1
  • Enzo Fernandez to be booked @ 12/5

City can pounce on chaotic Chelsea

Less than six months after Enzo Maresca led Chelsea to a brilliant Club World Cup success, the Blues have dispensed with his services and City are not likely to show any sympathy as the Londoners arrive at the Etihad Stadium with a shadow of uncertainty hanging over them.

The Blues had a pretty dreadful December with their only two wins in their last nine games under Maresca coming against Everton and League One Cardiff, before three successive disappointing outings against Newcastle, Aston Villa and Bournemouth led to the split.

The change of manager could go either way for Chelsea, whose players might perform with more freedom but also might just be marking time until they discover who their next permanent coach will be.

City are at a rest disadvantage having played on Thursday, but that’s about all Chelsea have going for them.

The home side had been in fine form before their goalless game at Sunderland, winning eight in a row including six Premier League successes and a Champions League victory over Real Madrid.

Take City to win a game featuring at least two goals, which was the case in every game of their recent winning run.

Cherki ready to strike again

Rayan Cherki has been finding his feet in the City attack and after recent goals against Brentford in the EFL Cup and Nottingham Forest in the Premier League, he looks a value bet to add to his five goals this season against Chelsea.

With Omar Marmoush away at the Africa Cup of Nations, Cherki has a chance to make his mark in a creative role but should also be capable of snapping up any chances that come his way.

City should be hungry for goals after being frustrated at Sunderland and they have the skills to take advantage of a Chelsea defence who may have to adapt to changes implemented by their caretaker coach.

Fernandez may fall foul of referee

City captain Bernardo Silva and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma both avoided yellow cards at Sunderland that would have seen them suspended for this game, but Chelsea midfielder Moses Caicedo was not so careful as an early booking against Bournemouth has ruled him out of this match.

Without Caicedo’s combativity in midfield, that could mean a more defensive role for fellow midfielder Enzo Fernandez, who in turn looks a prime candidate to earn a card at the Etihad.

Fernandez was one of five Chelsea players booked in their home defeat by Aston Villa and frustration could mount again if they are given the run-around by City.
