Michael Carrick is open to returning to Manchester United as interim boss, talkSPORT understands.

Carrick had a brief stint as caretaker after Jose Mourinho was sacked in 2018 before going on to manage Middlesbrough.

The Old Trafford legend has yet to be contacted by United as they assess their options regarding a short-term successor to Ruben Amorim.

Amorim was sacked on Monday less than 24 hours after he unleashed a shock attack on the club’s upper management in a press conference.

Another Old Trafford icon, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has also offered his services.

Treble-winning hero Solskjaer spent almost three years as United manager between December 2018 and November 2021.

Sources have told talkSPORT the Norwegian’s return would be welcomed by players including captain Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire.

United chiefs believe they will have a bigger pool to choose from if they wait until the summer to name a new full-time head coach.

Those options include Oliver Glasner, Thomas Tuchel, Mauricio Pochettino and Roberto De Zerbi.
