Malik Willis put on notice as Dolphins tipped to take ‘elite’ quarterback in draft

The quarterback situation in Miami may be more complicated than first thought.

The Dolphins made several changes to their roster this offseason, and notably cut ties with Tyreek Hill and Tua Tagovailoa.

The front office also made the decision to trade star wide receiver Jaylen Waddle to the Denver Broncos.

The Tua decision, which saw Miami eat one of the biggest cap hits in NFL history, marked the beginning of a new era for the franchise, which hasn’t made it past the Wild Card round of the playoffs since 2000.

With no quarterback, Miami made a splash in free agency, adding the consensus top signal caller Malik Willis in a three-year deal.

Willis had been with the Green Bay Packers, serving as Jordan Love’s back-up for the last two-seasons, and fans are excited to see him get his shot as a starter.

Despite only starting three games in his Packers tenure, the Dolphins clearly have faith in the 26-year-old that he can be their long-term solution under center.

However, it hasn’t stopped rumors that Miami is looking to add another quarterback in the draft, having already been linked with a move for Ty Simpson.

PFSN’s Jacob Infante has the team drafting an elite hurler who will be overlooked by many.

Miami could look to ‘elite’ quarterback in 2026 draft

“He’s as raw as the day is long, but I’d argue no quarterback in the 2026 draft has the physical tools that Taylen Green has,” Infante wrote.

“He’s an elite athlete at quarterback with a big frame and a strong arm.

“He is worth a flyer for a team with a lot of mid-round capital like the Dolphins.”

Green has been described as a freak athlete, whose size and speed are unprecedented.

At the Combine, he finished in the 99th percentile for height, arm length, 40 yard-dash, vertical jump and broad jump.

The dual-threat QB rushed for 1,379 yards and 16 TDs on the ground during his two years at Arkansas, while also throwing for 2714 yards and 19 touchdowns.

After the Waddle trade, the Dolphins have 11-picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, and it’s hard to see that they won’t at least do their research on adding another quarterback.

NFL insider addresses Willis-Waddle trade rumors

When Miami made the decision to move on from Waddle, there were immediate questions as to whether Willis was aware of the team’s plans at wide receiver.

The trade of Waddle cemented the fact Miami were in fact re-building, and questions began to surface as to whether Willis was in the know or not.

According to NFL insider Cameron Wolfe, he certainly was.

“From the conversations I’ve had, they gave as far as Jon-Eric Sullivan, Jeff Hafley, and Malik Willis a heads up,” Wolfe said on the March 27 edition of The Insiders.

“He was in the know of the decision, and he is still all in on the plan, just like they were when the signed him in free agency.

“This isn’t a shock adjustment to what particularly happened. Malik Willis was signed because they view him as a potential long-term answer there.”
