Jockey rushed to hospital with horror leg injury as races delayed

Jockey Shane O’Callaghan was taken to hospital after suffering a ‘significant’ leg injury during Thursday’s racing at Clonmel.

He had been on board Boston Fire in the 2.20 at Clonmel, Republic of Ireland.

O’Callaghan was subsequently sent to hospital for further assessment after being tended to by doctors at the scene.

The Peter Maher-trained horse slipped on the turf.

It occurred after jumping the third to last hurdle in the Monroe Maiden Hurdle.

His injury was described as ‘quite significant’ by Racing TV reporter Johnny Ward at the track.

Meanwhile, the action was delayed by around 30 minutes as a result of the incident.

The Lisronagh Handicap Hurdle had been scheduled to get underway at 2.50 but was ultimately pushed back to 3.20.

The Irishman has ridden seven winners on home soil so far this season.

His most recent victory came on board Rockbrook in the Supporting Irish Racing Rated Novice Chase at Tramore on New Year’s Day.

Meanwhile, the 2.20 at Clonmel was won by the Willie Mullins-trained King Of Aces ahead of Speculateur.

Mullins also saw I Walked The Line claim victory in the 12.50 Rathronan Maiden Hunters Chase in the second race day.

Following King Of Aces’ win, he said: “We have been trying to replace Billaway and I had Cause For Comment last year who didn’t quite measure up, so I got this horse and I’m hoping to make him into a Billaway-type horse.

“I’ll look to a winners’ of one hunters chase next and maybe aim him for the Ladies Cup at Punchestown then and afterwards to Stratford.

“Next year, as a six-year-old, I’d hope to work towards Cheltenham.”

The two further races on the card were able to be completed following the delay to the action.

Those races ended in wins for Our Uncle Jack and The Little Yank.
