Hull v Middlesbrough prediction

Middlesbrough make the short trip down the Yorkshire coast as favourites for victory from Friday night’s game at Hull, with new manager Kim Hellberg looking to make it two wins out of two since joining the club last week.

The Swede took over a side, following Rob Edwards’ exit to Wolves, who had won just one of their previous six matches but managed to win his first match in charge of his new team on Saturday afternoon against Derby, overturning a 1-0 deficit with 15 minutes remaining.

The win saw Boro climb back into the automatic promotion places in the Championship, where they now have a two point cushion over third-placed Millwall.

Away form is one area where Hellberg will need to improve on his predecessor, with 37-year-old having taken over a side with just one win in their last seven matches on the road, though have lost only one of their last four.

Last weekend saw Hull manage to end a run of three defeats in their last four games with a highly impressive 2-1 win away at a Stoke side who started went into the weekend second in the Championship table.

Victory in Staffordshire saw Sergej Jakirovic’s side climb up to ninth place in the second tier table, and such is the tight-congestion in the standings, the Bosnian’s side head into Friday night’s clash just a point off the play-off positions, and will climb as high as third with a win.

The Tigers have an impressive home record, losing just one of their last seven, though that defeat did come in their most recent outing in front of their home fans against Ipswich, so will be looking to get back to winning ways at the MKM Stadium in front of the Sky cameras on Friday night.

Hull have won only one of their last six matches against Middlesbrough, losing four in that time including each of the most recent two meetings. Neither teams are in particularly inspired form heading into Friday’s match, which I believe points towards a 1-1 draw.

Hull v Middlesbrough betting tips

Derby draw in Humberside

Both teams ended winless runs with victories last weekend to boost confidence, but Hull’s impressive home record combined with Middlesbrough’s position of second in the table should point towards an entertaining affair, though I think the sides will go blow for blow and cancel the other out.

Another Gelhardt goal

Only two Championship players have scored more goals in all competitions than Joe Gelhardt, whose 90th minute winner at high-flying Stoke last weekend was his ninth of the campaign, seven of which have come in the last nine games for the on loan Leeds star.

Crooks cautioned

No player on either team have received as many yellow cards this season as Hull’s Matt Crooks, who has been booked in each of his last two appearances for the Tigers to take his tally for the season to six.
