How much has Ruben Amorim cost Manchester United? Wages and record as Red Devils boss sacked

Manchester United’s decision to sack Ruben Amorim is set to be a costly choice by the club.

The Portuguese coach was dismissed on Monday after 14 months in charge at Old Trafford.

Darren Fletcher has been placed in interim charge for the Red Devils’ trip to Burnley on Wednesday.

Amorim was appointed in November 2024 on a deal through to the end of next season.

However, he has now left the club with 18 months remaining on that contract.

His exit comes following Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Leeds, which leaves United sixth in the Premier League.

How much did Ruben Amorim cost United?

The Red Devils were forced to pay compensation to Sporting Lisbon after appointing Amorim last season.

His arrival as Erik ten Hag’s successor cost the club an initial £9.5million fee.

Meanwhile, Amorim’s contract at Old Trafford saw him earn £6.7m-a-year.

It is understood, per the terms of that deal, United will have to pay the 40-year-old his contract in full after sacking him.

This is set to cost the club a further £10.05million on top of the £7.8million he has already earned.

In total, Amorim’s doomed United tenure will cost the club £27.35million.

The Red Devils have also spent around £250million on new signings since he was appointed.

Ruben Amorim’s United record

Amorim’s exit comes after 63 matches in charge across all competitions, of which he won just 25.

It leaves the former Sporting boss with a win rate of just 39.7 per cent, the lowest of any managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.

Amorim also claimed just 1.24 points-per-game from 47 matches at the helm.

His tally is equal to that of fellow former Premier League coaches Alan Pardew, Chris Coleman and Bruno Lage.

United have had six different permanent managers since their legendary boss ended his career.

David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ten Hag all departed having won over half of their matches in charge.

Mourinho had the best record of the six post-Ferguson bosses, winning 58.33 per cent of his matches.

Meanwhile, last season’s 15th place finish was United’s lowest for 35 years.

Their tally of 42 points was also the club’s worst in the top-flight since suffering relegation back in the 1973/74 season.

Defeat in the Europa League final to Tottenham in May confirmed a first failure to qualify for Europe for 11 years.

It was also the first time in three seasons that United did not win a trophy.
