Ghana ‘open talks’ with World Cup-winning manager before England showdown

Joachim Low is reportedly in talks to become the new Ghana head coach.

Otto Addo was sacked by the Black Stars earlier this week despite guiding the nation to 2026 World Cup qualification.

Ghana finished top of their Confederation of African Football (CAF) qualifying group to book one of 48 spots in the tournament.

And it appears that Low, who won the 2014 World Cup with Germany, could lead the African nation this summer.

Multiple Ghanaian outlets have reported that the 66-year-old is set to accept the head coach position.

Low is expected to sign a short-term contract that focuses on the World Cup, and earn around €150,000 (£131,000) per month.

Who will Ghana play at the World Cup?

Ghana have been drawn in Group L and will face Panama in their first match on June 17 in Toronto.

They will then meet England in Foxborough, Massachusetts six days later in what will be only their second ever match against each other.

Croatia will be their final group opponents on June 27 in Philadelphia.

A top-two finish sends them into the last 32, although they could still qualify as one of eight best-ranked third-place teams.

Low’s managerial career

A former midfielder, Low managed in Germany, Turkey and Austria before turning to the international stage.

He first joined the Germany set-up in 2004 as assistant to Tottenham Hotspur legend Jurgen Klinsmann.

Low then became manager two years later when Klinsmann opted to not extend his contract.

Euro 2008 was his first major tournament as boss, where Germany lost in the final 1-0 to Spain.

At the 2010 World Cup, Die Mannschaft finished top of their group thanks to a 1-0 win over Ghana in their final match.

They then finished third, before being knocked out of Euro 2012 at the semi-final stage.

Germany finally ended their 24-year wait for a World Cup trophy in 2014 as they beat Argentina 1-0 in extra-time in the final.

Low oversaw a semi-final exit at Euro 2016, but then exited the 2018 World Cup in the groups and lost to England at Euro 2020.
