Gary Neville reveals Salford commentator bets on same derogatory chant every match

Gary Neville has revealed how an opposition fan chant at Salford City has become a source of entertainment for their commentator.

The Manchester United legend leads the club’s ownership group with David Beckham, businessman Declan Kelly and Lord Mervyn Davies.

Neville frequently attends matches, with Salford currently competing in League Two.

Given his immense success at United, where he won 21 trophies and was captain, he has been the subject of jeers from visiting teams.

One chant is so common that even Salford staff like to hazard a guess as to when it’s cried out from the away end at Moor Lane.

When appearing on The Overlap in November, Neville was asked for the best chant he’s ever heard in football.

“Gary Neville, is a w*****,” he responded with a grin.

The former England international then explained: “Our commentator at Salford has a bet every single week, I think.

“At what point in the game, this has been going on for years, the away fans will sing ‘Gary Neville is a w*****’.

“They have a bet every single week, it’s usually inside the first three minutes.”

Three years after retiring, Neville agreed to purchase Salford in 2014 alongside Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt and his brother Phil.

All five ex-United stars form The Class of ’92, having gone from young stars to club legends that were part of their iconic treble win in 1999.

Beckham also starred and joined his former teammates at Salford in 2019, with the club being a huge success under their ownership.

They were promoted four times across five seasons from the 2014/15 campaign onwards to reach League Two.

Salford have remained in the fourth tier of English football ever since and even reached the promotion play-offs in 2023, but lost.

Despite their sustained appearances in the English Football League, Neville was the subject of protests earlier this season.

Fans invaded the pitch and wore hoodies that read ‘Gary Neville is a traitor’ during their 1-0 win against Oldham Athletic.

Some also waved the flag of St George, whilst the ‘Gary Neville is a w*****’ chant was heard.

The protest followed Neville’s criticism of Union Jack and St George flags being displayed across England.

He argued that the population is ‘being turned on each other’ due to ‘angry, middle-aged white men who know what they’re doing’.
