Filipe Luis tipped for huge European job after winning a trophy every 17 games in Brazil

Filipe Luis has been compared to Diego Simeone after continuing his impressive start in management.

The Brazilian has even been tipped to succeed his former boss at Atletico Madrid in the future.

Luis is fresh from winning the Copa Libertadores with Flamengo, the fourth trophy of his senior coaching career.

It joins the Brazilian Cup, Brazilian Super Cup and Rio de Janeiro State Championship in his trophy cabinet.

Meanwhile, the 40-year-old also won the Intercontinental Cup during his time in charge of the club’s under-20 side.

Since his appointment in September 2024, Luis has won 55 of his 85 matches across all competitions, losing just nine times.

He will be hoping to keep that form going at this month’s FIFA Intercontinental Cup.

Ahead of Flamengo’s second round clash, South American football journalist Tim Vickery spoke to talkSPORT.

Asked if Luis has the credentials to manage former club Chelsea in the future, he explained: “Most certainly.

“He’s a very intelligent young man. He’s only been doing it for just over a year. He’s already won everything there is to be won and now they’ve effectively got the last round off.

“They will fly off for the Intercontinental in Qatar, which plays big over here. (On) Wednesday, they’ve got Cruz Azul of Mexico.

“Win that one, you’ve got Pyramids of Egypt. Win that one, you’ve got Paris Saint-Germain, which is the big one.

“They’re really dreaming of that. So that’s the title that’s still left for him. Chelsea manager, perhaps, but I think there’s one before that and that’s Atletico Madrid, where he spent most of his career.

“There is a little bit, including in his monochromatic all-black garb on the touchline, there’s a little bit of Diego Simeone in him and so I think it’s likely to be Madrid before Chelsea.”

Simeone, who twice signed Luis for Atletico as a player, has been in charge of the Spanish giants since 2011.

The Argentinian has since won eight trophies with the club, including a pair of LaLiga titles.

Meanwhile, his current contract runs through until the end of next season.

Luis made 333 appearances for Atletico across two spells, which came either side of a season at Chelsea.

As well as winning the Premier League with the Blues, he also clinched two Europa Leagues and the Copa del Rey whilst in Spain.

The former Brazil international now finds himself in the dugout at Flamengo, where he ended his playing career at the start of 2024.

His side face Cruz Azul in Qatar in their opening match of the FIFA Intercontinental Cup on Wednesday.

A win will set up a clash against African champions Pyramids, with another victory earning a spot in the final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Flamengo won the previous iteration of the tournament in 1981 by beating Liverpool in Japan.

Meanwhile, their victory in the Copa Libertadores last month was the fourth in their history and a third in six years.
