Fenerbahce v Aston Villa prediction
Aston Villa will be looking to get back to winning ways on Thursday evening in Turkey after falling to a surprise home defeat against Everton on Sunday afternoon, missing their opportunity to climb into second and close the gap on Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Unai Emery’s side have now won just two of their last five matches, and just one of their last four in the league, having won each of their previous 11 outings, but still sit level on points with Manchester City and with an eight point lead over fifth placed Manchester United in the race for the Champions League.
The Villans have had an enjoyable time in Europe so far this season too, winning five of their six matches in the Europa League to leave them with only goal difference separating them from the top of the standings, and already assured of their place in the knockout phase.
Fenerbahce head into Thursday’s clash having won seven of their last eight matches in all competitions, including each of their last four, keeping clean sheets in six of those victories.
Domenico Tedesco’s side currently sit just a point behind Galatasaray, who they beat 2-0 in the Super Cup final a fortnight ago, at the top of the Super Lig.
The Yellow Canaries have lost just once at home in all competitions this season, but have won only two of their last five in front of their home fans, which may give the Villans some confidence.
The Turkish side are currently sat 12th in the Europa League table, just two points off the top eight which would see them reach the round of 16 automatically, a gap they’ll be looking to close in their final two fixtures.
The two teams haven’t met in a competitive meeting since the opening round of the UEFA Cup in 1977, Aston Villa winning 4-0 at home in the first leg before winning the second leg 2-0 in Istanbul en route to a quarter final exit against Johan Cruyff’s Barcelona.
Both teams have enjoyed unbeaten runs in recent months, which leads me to believe a draw may be on the cards on Thursday evening in Istanbul. Goals can be expected, so I’m predicting a 2-2 draw.
