Atrial fibrillation, sometimes known as Afib or AF, is an issue in regards to an unsteady heartbeat.

Symptoms includes an irregular heartbeat, chest pain or tightness, a heartbeat over 100 beats per minute [bpm] and dizziness.

In a statement from his current club Lazio, it was confirmed that his surgery was a success and he will return to work in the coming days.

“SS Lazio announces that coach Maurizio Sarri, following a diagnosis of atrial fibrillation, underwent transcatheter ablation surgery using PFA technology at the Tor Vergata Polyclinic.

“The surgery, performed by Professor Andrea Natale, an international pioneer with over thirty years of experience in treating this condition, was successful.

“The SS Lazio team doctor, Dr. Italo Leo, was present at the event.

“The coach will resume regular management of the team in the next few days.

“SS Lazio and the Coach thank the Policlinico Tor Vergata and Professor Natale’s team for their high level of professionalism and the quality of care they provide to all patients every day.”

Sarri’s career to date

A former banker, Sarri began his coaching career in his native Italy and worked his way into the proffesional leagues.

He guided Empoli back to Serie A in 2014, and left for giants Napoli in the following year as successor to Rafa Benitez.

Sarri left in 2018 after finishing second in the Italian top flight and moved to Chelsea, who had just parted with Antonio Conte.

The Blues went unbeaten in the opening 12 Premier League matches of his tenure, a first for a manager of head coach.

Chelsea reached the League Cup final and lost on penalties against Manchester City.

However, they later won their second Europa League title as they thrashed rivals Arsenal 4-1 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Despite the European success, Sarri requested to leave Chelsea at the end of the 2018/19 season for Juventus.

A statement from the Blues revealed that he wished to return to Italy to be closer to his elderly parents.

He joined Lazio in 2021 and, although he resigned three years later, he returned in June earlier this year.

Sarri was later hospitalised after falling ill, but he was eventually on hand to return to training.
