Leyton Orient have announced the appointment of Populous as their designers for a brand new stadium.

League One side Orient have played at Brisbane Road, known as the BetWright Stadium for sponsorship reasons, since 1937.

However, the O’s have worked with the London Borough of Waltham Forest Council to discuss options for a new site in north east London.

The EFL club are aiming to build a new ‘world-class stadium’, as well as a ‘wider, multi-sport campus’.

It will become the new home of the club’s men’s and women’s teams, as well as a London American Football team.

And Populous, who designed Wembley Stadium and the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, have been called in to lead the project.

David Gandler, the majority shareholder at Orient, said: “Appointing Populous is a major milestone and a clear statement of our ambition.

“We’re building a world-class, multi-sport campus that honours Leyton Orient’s heritage while creating a vibrant, affordable, technology-driven destination for our fans and our community.

“This will be a home that inspires not just for today, but for generations.”

“We are honoured to partner with Leyton Orient at such a defining moment in their journey,” Populous senior principal Declan Sharkey added.

“Our vision is to design a unique stadium and mixed-use development that celebrates the club’s heritage while embracing the future, blending world-class sporting architecture and digital innovation with a vibrant, community-driven neighbourhood.

“Together, we will create a new landmark for East London and beyond.”

What stadiums have Populous designed?

The world-renowned design firm, previously called HOK Sports Venue Events, have undertaken projects across world sport.

Populous were the architects of the Emirates Stadium, the home of Arsenal, and England’s national football stadium Wembley.

They also designed the London Stadium, which hosted the 2012 Olympics and is now where West Ham play their home matches.

However, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is arguably the most impressive project in their portfolio.

Aside from Tottenham matches, it also hosts NFL games and concerts as an incredibly impressive 62,850-capacity multi-purpose venue.

Populous were also the architects of the Yankee Stadium in New York, one of the city’s most iconic venues.

They have also designed the New Highmark Stadium, which is set to open in July and become the new home of NFL side Buffalo Bills.

Furthermore, they were behind the design for the Sphere, which is an entertainment and music venue near the Las Vegas Strip.

talkSPORT understands that Populous are involved in the creative process regarding a potential new stadium for Chelsea.

A move to Earl’s Court, as well as rebuilding their Stamford Bridge home, have been options for the Blues.
