EFL boss sacked two days before Christmas amid relegation fears

Oxford United have sacked manager Gary Rowett just two days before Christmas.

Rowett’s departure comes just three days after their 1-0 defeat to Charlton in the Championship.

Oxford have just one win in 10 and are third from bottom after 22 games.

Chairman, Grant Ferguson, said: “Gary joined during a challenging period and deserves immense credit for the hard work and leadership that saw us retain our Championship status last season.

“However, following a disappointing run of results, we have had to take this difficult decision in the best interests of the club.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to place on record our thanks to Gary and Mark for their contribution to the football club and to wish them all the best for the future.”

Rowett was appointed in December 2024 and helped them secure safety in the second tier.

It was their first season back at that level in 25 years following promotion from League One.

Oxford are next in action against Southampton on Boxing Day.
