Devin Haney vs Rolly Romero dramatically collapses as reason comes to light

Negotiations for a WBO and WBA welterweight unification clash between Devin Haney and Rolly Romero have reportedly collapsed.

Organisers had planned for the fight to headline a PBC event on May 30, live on Amazon Prime PPV.

Haney picked up the WBO welterweight title in November by beating Norman Jr

Everything looked to be moving in the right direction when Romero confirmed last month that he had signed his side of the deal.

Haney then came out and declared that the fight was ‘very likely’ to happen next.

Fight OFF

However, esteemed boxing journalist Dan Rafael is now reporting that Haney has turned down the fight.

The reason for Haney pulling the plug is that he wasn’t offered a guaranteed purse.

PBC instead proposed that Haney receive 50 per cent of the event’s profits, which was deemed insufficient by ‘The Dream’s’ team.

“Rolly delusional acting like he some kind of draw but can’t sell out a ballroom,” Haney posted on X on Sunday night.

“That’s why the fight hasn’t been made yet. The money isn’t right.

“I’m looking at other options. He can go fight his mandatory since he’s such a draw.”

Haney (30-0) became a three-weight world champion in November when he snatched the WBO welterweight title from Brian Norman Jr.

He was expected to pursue a rematch with Ryan Garcia after his bout with Romero.

Three weeks ago, Devin Haney Promotions uploaded a cryptic Instagram story of Haney and Garcia facing off with the caption “Allegiant Stadium, Sept 5.”

Perhaps now that the Romero fight has fallen through, that date could be brought forward.

Romero (17-2) has been out of action since defeating Garcia for the WBA ‘regular’ strap last May.

He was then upgraded to full world champion in August when Jaron Ennis vacated the ‘super’ title.

Shakhram Giyasov is Romero’s WBA mandatory, and is reportedly set to box Jack Catterall for the WBA ‘regular’ belt on the Oleksandr Usyk vs Rico Verhoeven undercard on May 23.
