Daniel Gafford reacts to Mavericks’ ‘tough blow’ of Anthony Davis injury

Anthony Davis sustained a hand injury that could require surgery. Regardless, the Dallas Mavericks are expected to be without the star forward for six weeks to several months, depending on whether or not he needs surgery. On Saturday, teammate Daniel Gafford shared his reaction to the bad news.

Gafford, who is 27 years old, admits the Mavericks suffered a tough blow, according to Mike Curtis of The Dallas Morning News. He follows that statement up by claiming he and his teammates must step up and fill the void for the unforeseen future.

“It’s a tough blow for us,” said Gafford about Davis. “It’s just something that happened out of nowhere, something unexpected, and like we always say, ‘Next man up’ mentality. We just gotta come and pick up where he left off.”

Leading up to Saturday’s contest against the Chicago Bulls, the Mavericks own a 14-24 record, ranking them 12th in the Western Conference. It’s been a struggle so far this season, even when Anthony Davis was healthy. So, we’ll see how the club moves forward with one of its star players out for several weeks.

The 10-time All-Star has played in 20 games for the Mavericks this campaign. In those contests, Davis is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, and 1.7 blocks per game while shooting 50.6% from the field and 27.0% from beyond the three-point line. With Davis set to miss some time, Dallas is going to have to rely on Daniel Gafford, PJ Washington, Caleb Martin, and Dwight Powell in the front court.
