Conor McGregor wants to make UFC history as he sets ambitions for comeback

Conor McGregor has revealed that one of his biggest motivations to return to the UFC is to conquer a third division.

McGregor has made it clear that his sights are set on ending his near five-year hiatus from the Octagon at the UFC White House event next June.

In fact, he was insistent that his return would finally see him fighting long-term rival Michael Chandler, although he has since suggested that that may no longer be the case.

The Irishman revealed he is out to reach new heights, with the intention of becoming the first fighter to win titles in three weight classes.

He explained: “I’m motivated, self-motivated.

“I for sure want a crack at that 170lbs belt to go for the triple crown…

“I hope [it’s Michael Chandler], but I won’t say no to anyone.

“The UFC will decide it, but I don’t care.

“I just want to come back, I am so eager to come back and show my work.”

After becoming the UFC’s first-ever dual-weight champion almost 10 years ago, the Irishman has already cemented his name in the UFC history books.

But, it seems he’s not planning on stopping there.

Islam Makhachev is the current king at 170lbs, and the pair have a history of verbal back and forths.

Makhachev could likely open the door to a clash given his mentor Khabib Nurmagomedov’s history with the Irishman.

Any showdown could be a blockbuster commercial event, and one of the UFC’s biggest in recent years, but ‘The Notorious’ is not yet ranked in the division.

Conor McGregor’s journey to becoming a two-weight champion

McGregor made his UFC debut in 2013 and quickly gained the attention of fans due to both his personality and performance.

In 2015, he won the interim featherweight title when he stopped Chad Mendes in the second round of their clash.

‘The Notorious’ then went on to unify the division five months later with just one punch, as he knocked out Jose Aldo in just a matter of seconds.

The following year, McGregor made his lightweight debut and beat reigning champion Eddie Alvarez to achieve the impressive feat in the sport.

McGregor has fought a handful of times after that, but has been out of action since breaking his leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier in 2021.

While he awaits Dana White‘s plans for June 14, the 37-year-old is now back in training to try and breathe new life into his career in 2026.
