Caleb Williams risks wrath of Chicago Bears fans with gesture gone wrong on brink of history

Caleb Williams paid homage to Ben Johnson by rocking his high school jersey in Week 18.

As he arrived at historic Soldier Field ahead of a regular-season finale against the Detroit Lions, the second-year quarterback was seen heading to the locker room in a Rockets shirt.

Coach Johnson, who has led Chicago to the top of the NFC North and is yet to take his foot off the gas, wore No. 12 for A. C. Reynolds High School back in the day.

He never made it to the NFL as a player, so Williams’ gesture for his coach was a warm one.

The only problem? On first look, that Rockets jersey looks suspiciously like a Green Bay Packers one.

The Bears posted a video Williams’ arrival on their official social media accounts, and plenty of fans were forced to take more than one look at the footage.

Even though the caption confirmed Caleb was ‘rocking Coach Johnson’s high school jersey,’ a number of viewers were convinced he was paying tribute to legendary Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers instead.

“Nah, why did I think he was wearing a Packers jersey?” one asked.

“Oh God, don’t ever wear those colors again,” another said.

“That’s an Aaron Rodgers jersey,” a third claimed.

“Nahhh that looked like a Rodgers jersey… nearly a jump scare,” a fourth wrote.

“I was really concerned for a second, please get these colors off my f***ing screen,” a fifth begged.

The Bears and Packers have one of the NFL’s most historic rivalries, which dates way back to 1921.

Williams led Chicago to a dramatic 22-16 overtime win in the most recent meeting, on December 21.

Bears players were seen mocking Green Bay in the days that followed, with some wearing cheese grater hats in public.

It’s fair to say, then, that wearing a Rockets jersey is the only time Williams will be in Packers colors.

The sophomore star will also be out to win back those he worried in the Bears fan base by making franchise history on Sunday night.

What record can Caleb Williams break in Week 18?

He has Chicago’s single-season passing record in his sights, and could become the team’s first QB to surpass 4,000 yards.

Coming into the finale against Detroit, Williams has 3,730 passing yards — 109 shy of Erik Kramer (3,838) as the Bears’ all-time single-season leader.

He needs just 270 to get past the 4,000-yard mark.

“It’d be cool, just in the sense of there’s never been one here,” Williams said of hitting the milestone.

“I think I was brought here for those types of things and those types of moments, the things that haven’t been done here, to try and be able to accomplish.”
