The most eagerly anticipated US sporting event of the year takes place in San Francisco in the coming days as the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots go head to head in a bid to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy, a rematch of the 2014 Super Bowl.
Both teams finished the regular season with 14-3 records but it will be the Seahawks, the number one seed from the NFC, who head into this year’s Super Bowl as pre-match favourites.
Head coach Mike Macdonald is in just his second season in charge of Seattle, but have managed to be crowned NFC champions despite missing out on the playoffs altogether last season, and will be looking to be crowned Super Bowl champions for just the second time in franchise history, 13 years after their debut triumph.
The Seahawks, led by quarterback Sam Darnold in his first season since his transfer from the Minnesota Vikings last year, were crowned NFC West champions for the first time since 2020, setting a new franchise record of 14 wins in the process.
The Washington state side then defeated NFC West rivals San Francisco 49ers then the LA Rams in the playoffs to book their first appearance at a Super Bowl in 11 years, when they lost out to the Patriots.
The New England Patriots are in just their first season under new head coach Mike Vrabel, who took over following consecutive 4-13 seasons, turning the franchise’s fortunes around and delivering a 14-win campaign and leading them to their first Super Bowl since the Tom Brady-Bill Belichick era.
New England were crowned AFC East champions for the first time in six years, en route to extending their own record of a 12th Super Bowl appearance, in the hunt for what would be record breaking seventh Super Bowl title.
Vrabel, who won three Super Bowls as a player with the Patriots, has led a franchise who hadn’t won a playoff game since the 2019 Super Bowl, to the AFC Championship, defeating the LA Chargers and Houston Texans in Massachusetts before getting the better of the Denver Broncos in a mile-high blizzard to book their ticket to San Francisco.
New England are led by second-year quarterback Drake Maye, picked by the Patriots third overall in the 2024 draft and led the AFC this seasons in passing yards and touchdowns, as well as leading the league in completion percentage and passer rating.
The two teams haven’t played each other since Week 2 of the 2024 season, just Macdonald’s second match in charge of the Seahawks against Jerod Mayo’s Patriots side, with Seattle edging to victory in overtime at Foxborough.
