Paul Goldschmidt’s time with the New York Yankees could be over, but the veteran first baseman does not appear ready to walk away from baseball. After the Yankees were swept by the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS, Goldschmidt offered a brief hint about what could come next.
Goldschmidt, who turns 39, is set to become a free agent after the World Series. When asked about his future following Wednesday’s 4-3 loss to the Rays, he made it clear that his desire to compete remains strong.
“I love competing,” Goldschmidt said via MLB insider Jon Heyman of the New York Post.
Given his comments, Goldschmidt would like to continue playing, although he did not indicate whether he hopes to return to New York or join another team. His Yankees tenure could end after two seasons, with the organization now entering an offseason filled with questions following another early playoff exit.
The seven-time All-Star primarily served as a platoon bat for New York during the 2026 season. He reached on an error after pinch-hitting in Game 3 and finished the postseason 0-for-6.
Article Continues BelowDuring the regular season, Goldschmidt hit .252 with 18 home runs, 52 RBIs, 87 hits and 44 runs in 105 games. He also posted a .765 OPS.
The veteran has built a résumé that could eventually earn him a place in the Baseball Hall of Fame. Goldschmidt has accumulated 2,277 hits, 390 home runs, and 65.1 bWAR during his career, along with seven All-Star selections and the 2022 National League MVP Award.
