George Lombard Jr. had beer dripping down his face when he delivered the line Yankees fans will be repeating all October. Speaking to YES Network amid the champagne celebration in the visiting clubhouse at Target Field on Monday night, the rookie shortstop summed up his whirlwind season in three words.

“First of many,” Lombard said after the game.

The 21-year-old was asked to make sense of a year that has moved faster than he could process. “It's been a blur, to be honest,” Lombard said. “It's crazy to think that I was in Somerset to start the year, but yeah, it's been awesome. And we just got to keep it going. Like I said, first of many.”

The math backs up his disbelief. Lombard opened 2026 with Double-A Somerset and did not make his major league debut until Aug. 4, when the Yankees promoted him and optioned Anthony Volpe to Triple-A in the same move. Just over six weeks later, he is heading to his first career postseason as the everyday shortstop on a team chasing its first World Series title since 2009.

He contributed directly to the clinch, too. Lombard led off the eighth inning with a double to spark the rally that broke open an 8-3 win over the Twins, setting the table for Aaron Judge's three-run homer two batters later. New York had actually secured its spot before the game ended, as Toronto's loss to Detroit did the job independently, but the Yankees made it official on the field anyway.

Asked what he has learned about himself in his short time in the big leagues, Lombard did not overthink it. “A lot, a lot,” he said. “Obviously every day it's a learning process.” Teammates kept dousing him mid-interview, prompting a laugh and an admission that his head felt like an ice cube.

The berth marks New York's ninth playoff appearance in 10 seasons, and the club sits at 87-63 with a wild card spot guaranteed. For Lombard, whose tenure in the majors is barely longer than a single homestand, October now arrives as the natural next step rather than a distant reward.
