NEW YORKâ The New York Yankees capped off a memorable weekend with a 2-0 win over their Queens-based rivals on Sunday afternoon to secure a Subway Series victory.
After watching ace Cam Schlittler strike out eight batters and notch his 14th win of the campaign on the strength of six innings of one-hit ball against the crosstown New York Mets, Yankees manager Aaron Boone agreed that the flamethrower has been, in a word, âÂÂvaluableâ in 2026.
âÂÂI think valuable is a good word â©He might be the MVP, too,â Boone told reporters. âÂÂI mean, he's been awesome. â©Just an awesome season, and, hopefully, a lot left in the tank here for what we hope is another month and a half or so.âÂÂ
Cam Schlittler has continued to stake his claim as one of the sport's best starters
Schlittler holds a 1.95 ERA after his most recent scoreless outing. The mark is the second-lowest by a Yankee through their first 31 starts since 1913 and trails only Ron GuidryâÂÂs 1.71 mark from 1978.
Further, the 25-year-old has allowed one run or fewer in a franchise-record 21 starts this season. Excluding openers, Schlittler is just one of four American League pitchers to toss at least 21 starts of one run or fewer since 1917.

Los Angeles Dodgers legend Clayton Kershaw was the last pitcher to win both the Cy Young and an MVP when he took home both pieces of National League hardware in 2014. Justin Verlander was the last American League pitcher to capture both awards at once when he did so as a member of the Detroit Tigers in 2011.
SchlittlerâÂÂs Sunday showing allowed the Yankees to earn their 86th win of the campaign despite only tallying three hits, two of which were solo home runs off Mets starter Christian Scott by Ben Rice and Austin Wells.
Regardless of the buzz, the rightyâÂÂs focus has remained on helping his team enter October on a high note. New YorkâÂÂs magic number to clinch a Postseason berth sits at one after their latest series win.
âÂÂThe expectation is to make the playoffs, and the expectation is to win a championship,â Schlittler said. âÂÂWeâÂÂre in a good spot.âÂÂ
