New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone provided a positive update on Trent Grisham's recovery on Wednesday.

The 29-year-old was placed on the injured list on September 5 after being diagnosed with a Grade 2 right hamstring strain. When the injury was initially diagnosed, Boone acknowledged that Grisham could potentially miss the rest of the regular season.

Speaking ahead of their game against the Minnesota Twins, Boone said the outfielder has reached “a pretty decent speed” in his running progression while also participating in baseball activities. His return date remains uncertain, but his recent rehabilitation progress has given him a chance to return.

Grisham's absence has opened the door for Spencer Jones to take over as the Yankees’ everyday center fielder. During that stretch, Jones has batted .382 with two home runs, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored in his last 10 games. He is also slashing .361/.425/.528 across 10 games since assuming Grisham's spot.

Jones has maintained his defensive role while producing offensively, although he has recorded a 34.9% strikeout rate. He also hit a three-run homer during Tuesday night's win over the Twins.

The situation could create a major playing-time decision if Grisham returns. After hitting a career-best 34 home runs in 2025, Grisham is batting only .211 with a 95 OPS+ this season. His -8 defensive runs saved rank second-worst among qualified center fielders.

Still, Boone has continued to express confidence in Grisham and considers him a valuable player. Meanwhile, Jones' recent surge could give the Yankees another option in center field when Grisham becomes available.
