Lionel Messi will say goodbye to the Argentina national team during a friendly match next month.
Messi announced at the end of August that he is retiring from international football, ending a glittering 21-year spell for his country.
His news came just weeks after Argentina lost 1-0 against Spain in the 2026 World Cup final.
Club football pauses for the first international break of the 2026/27 season, which will last three weeks, towards the end of this month.
Argentina have three fixtures lined up and, despite his decision to call time with his nation, Messi will feature in the coming weeks.
Why is Messi in the Argentina squad?
The Argentina squad for the friendlies was revealed on Tuesday, and Messi is among the 28 players to be called up.
Argentina have said that he will join the team for their third and final friendly against Benin on October 3.
And their president Claudio Tapia has confirmed that the match will be Messi's farewell at the Estadio Monumental in Buenos Aires.
Speaking via ESPN, he said: "After a chat with Lionel Scaloni, we made the decision to invite the best player in the world, the emblem of our national team, our captain Lionel Andres Messi, so that he can have the farewell he truly deserves, on October 6th, in Argentina."
The occasion will be even more special for Messi as he made his home debut for Argentina at Estadio Monumental in October 2005.
He assisted Juan Roman Riquelme for the opener in a 2-0 win against Peru during their 2006 World Cup qualifying run.
It's not yet clear if Messi will play against Benin, but the fact that he has announced retirement would suggest that he won't.
Tapia is also said to have extended the invitation for the farewell to the players who are not in the latest squad, but were part of their 2022 World Cup win.
Victory in Qatar was the cherry on the icing on the cake for Messi and his Argentina career as he finally won football's biggest prize.
A second World Cup title in the summer just gone would have added to his endless achievements, but the defeat to Spain ended in tears.
Messi has scored 125 goals in 207 appearances for Argentina, with each metric the all-time highest for the South American nation.
Alongside his World Cup triumph, the 39-year-old is a two-time Copa America winner and Finalissima champion.
He scored 21 goals across six World Cups, the second-most in history, and his 34 matches played is the tournament record.
Messi, who will begin playing under his new Inter Miami head coach Kily Gonzalez on Wednesday, has recently been nominated for the Ballon d'Or.
The forward is one of 30 names in contention for the award, and is set to be present at the ceremony as the record eight-time winner.
