Diego “The Nightmare” Sanchez entered the UFC as the winner of the inaugural season of The Ultimate Fighter in 2005, stopping Kenny Florian to claim the middleweight tournament and a UFC contract. Over the next 16 years he became one of the promotion’s most durable and entertaining fighters, competing across middleweight, welterweight, and lightweight and briefly exploring featherweight His high-volume, never-back-down style produced seven Fight of the Night bonuses and three Wrestling Observer Newsletter Fights of the Year, including the 2006 war with Karo Parisyan and the 2009 classic against Clay Guida that later landed him in the UFC Hall of Fame.
In late 2009 he challenged B.J. Penn for the lightweight title at UFC 107, dropping an early round but lasting into the fifth before a doctor’s stoppage. Later highlights included a split-decision win over Takanori Gomi and a late-career TKO of Mickey Gall. The drawbacks were real: he never won a UFC title, absorbed a string of decision losses in the second half of his career, and his association with controversial coach Joshua Fabia in 2019–2021 produced public friction with the UFC and contributed to a sharp decline in results.
The UFC released Sanchez in April 2021 after pulling him from a scheduled bout against Donald Cerrone. The promotion cited his most recent loss and issues surrounding medical clearance related to brain-health concerns; Sanchez and his team declined to provide the written assurances the UFC sought. He marked the departure on social media with “free at last.” Outside the UFC he competed once in Eagle FC, losing a decision to Kevin Lee in March 2022, and once in bare-knuckle boxing, losing to Austin Trout in February 2023. There have been no further competitive bouts, and he has not announced any plans to return to the cage or ring.
Outside the sport, Sanchez has remained rooted in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he was a high-school wrestling state champion and long trained with the Jackson-Wink team. He has a daughter from an earlier marriage. In December 2024 he married Teresa Tapia, the widow of boxing champion Johnny Tapia; the marriage ended in divorce in 2026. Over the years he has spoken of interests in local combat-sports promotion, a documentary about his life, and small business ideas, and he has maintained ties to the Albuquerque fighting community.
In 2025 he pleaded guilty to a felony gun charge after firing a weapon from a moving vehicle and received five years of supervised probation plus community service. In September 2026 a DUI arrest violated that probation; in October a judge ordered 30 days in jail followed by mandatory inpatient treatment for substance issues. At present he is focused on completing those requirements rather than competing or pursuing new public ventures. His career is remembered for the explosive wars that defined early UFC television, even as later years have been marked by personal and legal challenges.
