Kevin Stefanski's Atlanta Falcons lost 30-23 in overtime to the Ravens as Tua Tagovailoa made his Atlanta debut. Stefanski was one of three Falcons who deserved blame for the loss including Tagovailoa, who threw the game-ending interception in overtime.
Stefanski pointed out a few problem areas after the game as he shared his blunt thoughts with reporter Will McFadden.
“We will learn from it…We didn't do enough to win that game. We had missed opportunities.”
Stefanski fell to 12 games under .500 over the course of his NFL coaching career with the Cleveland Browns and Falcons, casting doubt over whether he can lead Atlanta back to the Super Bowl. The Falcons have a tough game coming up on October 18 against Ben Johnson's Chicago Bears and the Bears are sure to be ornery after getting blown out by the Packers in Week 5.
Article Continues BelowStarting Falcons QB Michael Penix Jr. went down with a rib injury that led to Tagovailoa's debut and game-ending mistake, causing fans to point the finger at Tagovailoa, defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich and other members of Stefanski's team afterward. Penix Jr.'s rib injury looks like one that could linger, which will once again put pressure on Stefanski and his staff to prepare for multiple outcomes heading into their showdown with Chicago.
Stefanski knows the Falcons missed out on key opportunities, but that won't soften the blow of a tough loss to a team without its best player, Lamar Jackson. The Falcons have a dogfight on their hands in the NFC South with the Carolina Panthers leading the division at 2-2 and the Falcons a half-game behind. Falcons fans remain optimistic but are quickly growing restless after a game that few expected to unfold the way it did.
