The Minnesota Vikings’ passing game had to improvise in Week 4 with Justin Jefferson out against a hungry Miami Dolphins team. Vikings LB Eric Wilson became caught up in controversy involving a referee on a wild day that included a 15-10 Vikings home win and wrapped up with Kyler Murray comments on a nagging issue plaguing his team.

Murray noted that the Vikings are continuing to face trouble in one key area, before making a vow for the future.

“Kyler Murray said that they are going to ‘kick the door down’ soon when it comes to the offense getting going but called the pre-snap penalties ‘unacceptable,'” Matthew Collier of Purple Insider wrote.

Murray’s Week 3 disaster led to talk of a possible benching in favor of Carson Wentz. The former Cardinals signal caller responded with a 27-37 effort including 247 yards, but it came without a touchdown pass in a slugfest of a win against a low-end NFL team. Jefferson’s absence gave Murray a chance to find different targets down the field, including TJ Hockensen, who finished with 13 catches for 119 yards.

Fans expected better from Murray considering his high NFL Draft pick history and gaudy numbers from his days in Arizona. Murray, for his part, has helped lead coach Kevin O’Connell’s team to a to an unblemished 4-0 record this season with the Saints on deck for October 11.

Playing mistake-free football and avoiding pre-snap penalties often fall on the shoulders of a team’s starting quarterback, something Murray knows all too well heading into Week 5. The Vikings have a defense that helps the offense overcome mistakes, but that doesn’t mean the penalties are an issue that has to linger.
