Nick Saban is bullish on the Utah offense's chances of scoring in their upcoming clash against Houston on Saturday. But unbeknownst to him, Saban had a hand in shaping Utah coach Morgan Scalley.
During his appearance on College GameDay, Scalley told Saban a story about how an interaction with the legendary coach made him question his football knowledge.
“I always appreciated my time with you. You humbled me very quickly in a discussion about Cover 3. I went back from that saying, ‘Holy Cow. I don't know football,'” Scalley said.
Scalley is in his first season as Utah head coach after replacing Kyle Whittingham, who left to take the Michigan job. As it turns out, he actually does know quite a lot about football, as evidenced by his team's early-season success.
Scalley's Utah is riding a six-game winning streak heading into its big showdown with No. 14 Houston. The Cougars are the first ranked team the Utes have faced this season.
Article Continues BelowAfter a series of blowout wins, Utah finally got to play in a close game last week against Colorado. The Utes were even behind the Buffaloes in the second half, but they were eventually able to pull away in the fourth quarter. Devon Dampier had his shakiest game of the season as he went just 24 of 41 for 278 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. But he was able to deliver when it counted and threw a crucial touchdown pass after a Colorado turnover.
A win against Houston would be a huge boost to Scalley's bid to lead Utah to the Big 12 title and a potential College Football Playoff berth.
