The Atlanta Falcons have a completely disastrous quarterback situation just one week into the season. Atlanta started backup Cooper Rush in Week 1 with both Tua Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. both injured. One Falcons insider shared some information that makes it look like nothing will change this week.
Josh Kendall ofÃÂ The Athletic read the tea leaves, which seem to suggest that Cooper Rush will start for Atlanta in Week 2.
âÂÂTake it for what you will: The Falcons just updated their media advisory for the week. The old one listed: âÂÂStarting QB press conference' on Wednesday. The new one says âÂÂQB Cooper Rush press conference,'â Kendall posted on social media on Tuesday.
That certainly makes it look like Rush will remain as the starter. Falcons fans on social media were not happy to receive this news.
âÂÂThe end is near for the Penix era in Atlanta. This speaks volumes to me about where weâÂÂre going this season and the direction weâÂÂre taking this upcoming offseason,â one fan wrote. âÂÂItâÂÂs absurd weâÂÂre going to run Rush out there again knowing what he just did on Sunday. Congrats Panthers.âÂÂ
Article Continues BelowâÂÂNot going to be much of a home crowd experience this weekend. Expect lots of booing for the home team. Sad we are here,â another fan added.
There was plenty of hope around Atlanta that Penix could be ready by Week 2. NFL insider Ian Rapoport believes that Penix is the starting quarterback when healthy. But the nugget from Kendall certainly makes it look like Penix won't be ready enough to go in Week 2.
It will be fascinating to see what Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski says about the quarterback position later this week. Hopefully any update comes with positive injury news on Penix.
Falcons vs. Panthers kicks off at 1PM ET on September 20th.
