Panthers quarterback Bryce Young was hot in the first half of Sunday’s game against the Lions, but Detroit was able to tie the game at 16-16 at halftime.
Jameson Williams went up to make a nice catch on a shaky deep ball from Jared Goff late in the second quarter. That allowed the Lions to hit a 41-yard field goal from Jake Bates as time expired in the period to wipe out Carolina’s three-point advantage.
Detroit had tied the game just before the two-minute warning with Jahmyr Gibbs’ 1-yard touchdown run.
But the combination of Young and receiver Tetairoa McMillan has been terrific so far on Sunday night. Young finished the first half 15-of-20 for 178 yards with a touchdown, which went to McMillan. The young wideout caught nine of his 10 targets in the first two quarters for 147 yards, including a 32-yard score.
Chuba Hubbard also had a 15-yard touchdown.
Ryan Fitzgerald missed an extra point off the right upright, leaving the one point off the board.
On the other side, Goff is 13-of-21 for 153 yards. Williams has four receptions for 74 yards. Gibbs has 11 carries for 35 yards and two carries for 9 yards.
The Panthers will receive the second-half kickoff.
