The college football Week 6 schedule will feature a highly anticipated game between Texas football and the Oklahoma Sooners. The Red River Rivalry returns to the Cotton Bowl, and Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian already has a clear idea of what his team needs to do to get past the Sooners.

During his Tuesday press conference, Sarkisian explained that the game could ultimately come down to which team executes the fundamental aspects of football better and continued by breaking down his plan.

“The team that runs the ball, the team that converts their downs, the team that wins a turnover battle, and the team that can pressure the quarterback generally comes out on top. It generally comes back to the things that are important to football, right?” Sarkisian said.

In the head coach's view, Texas must be able to consistently move the chains while also forcing Oklahoma into mistakes and making life difficult for its quarterback.

While Texas enters the rivalry as the higher-ranked team, Sarkisian is not overlooking Oklahoma. He added that Sooners head coach Brent Venables may wish his team's record looked different. But he expects Oklahoma to play with the same intensity and physicality it has shown throughout the season.

“They're an excellent defensive football team. They've got draft picks all over on the defense. Offensively, they've got play-making ability. Similar to us, they're trying to find their way to find that level of consistency, but one thing I can be sure of, we're going to get their best shot.”

Texas is ranked No. 1 and enters the packed Week 6 schedule undefeated at 4-0. Meanwhile, Oklahoma sits at 2-2 and will be looking to pull off a major upset against the top-ranked Longhorns.

On paper, the upcoming game appears to favor Texas. Moreover, the Longhorns enter the game with some recent momentum in the rivalry after defeating Oklahoma 23-6 in the 2025 meeting.

Still, the history of the Red River Rivalry has repeatedly shown that records and rankings can quickly become secondary once Texas and Oklahoma meet in Dallas.
