The New York Giants recently learned that quarterback Jaxson Dart would be undergoing season-ending surgery after suffering an injury during Monday night's loss to the Los Angeles Rams. It's a tough blow amid a season that was filled with early promise for the Giants following their Week 1 win over the Dallas Cowboys.
Now, sports media personality Stephen A. Smith has kept it real about Jameis Winston's viability as the Giants' backup QB after his rough performance against the Rams on Monday.
“He is absolutely, positively great, right up until the time he's in the lineup… [Jameis] is more entertaining in the pre game chatter than he is once he’s behind center,” said Smith, per First Take on X, formerly Twitter.
Indeed, Winston has gone viral on several occasions for his offbeat demeanor, but that hasn't always translated into great play, as the quarterback has a knack for keeping both teams in the game with his propensity for epic throws and mind-numbingly bad interceptions.
It remains to be seen whether the Giants will explore the market for another backup quarterback to give Winston some competition for the starting job down the stretch of this season. While some of Monday's poor performance could be attributed to his unexpected insertion into the lineup, as well as the elite competition the Giants were facing, New York still will need to see a lot more from Winston moving forward in order to feel good about handing him the job.
In any case, the Giants will next hit the field on Monday afternoon at home vs the Tennessee Titans. Kickoff is set for 1:00 pm ET.
