Stefon Diggs turned from hero to goat in his debut game with the Washington Commanders on Sunday. The Commanders fell short against the Philadelphia Eagles, 24-22, at Lincoln Financial Field.

Diggs scored a big touchdown with 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter to cut the Eagles' lead, 17-15. After completing the 12-yard pass from Jayden Daniels, Diggs hugged the goalpost to celebrate before landing on his back.

The 32-year-old wide receiver was whistled for unsportsmanlike conduct, leading to a 15-yard penalty for the Commanders. It proved to be costly, as Washington was forced to kick instead of going for the two-point conversion.

After the game, Diggs acknowledged his lapse in judgment.

“I take full accountability,” said Diggs, as quoted by The Washington Post's Tashan Reed.

The NFL disallowed hugging, jumping on, and dunking over the goalpost in 2014.

In a report from ESPN's John Keim, coach Dan Quinn said they would have certainly gone for the two-point score had Diggs not committed the penalty. The four-time Pro Bowler, meanwhile, said he simply “forgot” about the rule.

“Back in the day, I've been playing for a long time, you used to be able to do that. I've got to be better,” said Diggs.

Diggs, whom Washington acquired after being waived by the New England Patriots, finished with four receptions for 55 yards and one touchdown.
